ChatGPT for keyword variations that other tools may miss (prompts are included)
ChatGPT is a database of thousands of words and phrases which we can use for Search Engine Optimization by using the right prompts.
This article explains how you can use ChatGPT in order to discover the keyword variations that people use to search or describe a topic.
This secret weapon could be the key to unlocking your keyword arsenal.
Add variations to your main keyword
I use ChatGPT for generating variations of the primary keyword phrase on a web page or targeted query.
These variations help the page reach a larger audience of people searching for the same information, but in a different way. This increases the semantic relevance of an article. I’ve seen a boost in traffic and search rankings almost every time I use this method.
The Starter Guide encourages this approach.
Google Ads Keyword Planner & Search Console was recommended to me. Both tools have been a great success for me.
These free keyword tools may be very useful, but they do not reveal all possible variations or alternatives for each word within a keyword phrase.
How to prompt ChatGPT with keyword variations
This example will help you better understand the process. Try refining the prompts and see if you get a better result!
Example keyword phrase: “drones for Beginners”
Break down your search term one word at atime.
Ask ChatGPT to suggest alternative words or variations that people use to describe the exact same thing.
Let’s go through the first word.
Keyword variation: ‘drones’
Step 2:ChatGPT Prompt:
-
List 20 ways that people commonly refer to drones. ”
Step 2: Copy your list into the note-taking software of your choice.
Step 4: Use your brain to eliminate any words and phrases that don’t make any sense in the context.
I usually cut around 10-20% from this list. Sometimes, if there aren’t enough ideas, I will ask ChatGPT for 20 more.
Step 5: Pull up the article that needs to be improved, and do a search. To check if the phrase or word you copied is on the page, copy and paste it.
Note: I realize this can be a tedious process. It is for this reason that I created my own tool. This allows me to copy and paste text into one box, and then a list with words and phrases into another. Upon submission, the tool will highlight words and phrases found in the text. Unfortunately, I cannot find an online tool that can do this. If you do, let me know.
Step 5 : Add the missing words and phrases on the page.
Keyword Variation: “beginners”
Step 2: ChatGPT Prompt:
-
List 20 words and phrases that people commonly use to describe someone as a “beginner”. ”
Repeat the steps 2-5.
The full keyword phrase: “best drones for Beginners”
ChatGPT can generate words and phrases that describe the concept.
This example prompt would be:
-
List the 20 most common ways that people describe someone who is a “beginner in flying a drone”.
Add the best phrases and words that we have missed.
Search for words and phrases that the demographic you are targeting may use
The next prompt is based on the keyword phrase that a particular page targets.
It is important to determine the user persona or demographic of the searcher in order to get a list words and phrases that they might use to describe the topic.
The example shows a “beginner” demographic. This will vary for many topics.
Other demographics that might be targeted include age, gender and location.
This could be, more practically, a man of 50 years old, an iPhone owner, a boater or skier, a new mother, aspiring homeowner, seasoned expert, doctor or gardener.
This example prompt is:
-
List twenty ways that a beginner in drone flying may describe the drone.
This example will give you the best results.
ChatGPT has generated some unique words and phrases for me based on this example.
- newbie
- greenhorn
- first timer
- beginner-level
- Starting out
- no prior experience
- first-time pilots
- Easy to Understand
- The easiest drone to fly
- drones for newbies
- entry-level
- Most forgiving
- user-friendly
I was curious to find out if these words or phrases appeared on any of the Google’s top three ranking pages. The top ranking page was the one that included the most of these words and phrases.
It’s not just because they use more words that they are ranked higher. I think it’s a combination of that and many other factors.
Add missing word variations using best practice
Don’t just add these word variations randomly anywhere. Add them to sentences that are a little vague. This is a great way to make the sentence more relevant. Sometimes I create a brand new sentence with the aid of ChatGPT.
In this example, the vague sentence would be:
-
To make this list, all of the products had to have a solid construction and a wide range of features.
The following sentence is a better one that uses a variation on the keyword.
-
To make this list, a drone had to be both durable and easy to use for our novice tester.
Two things stand out to me about the new sentence.
- The word “drone”, which is more NLP friendly, was added to the sentence. The subject is now clearer.
- I added “durability” to the list and also “user-friendly.” Someone who has never flown a UAV before is likely to crash it quite a bit. It could be a lot easier to use if the drone is user-friendly.
Search engines tend to rank sites higher when they include multiple variations of the keyword.
This will make your article more informative, useful and relevant for the searcher.
