ter is now brand “X”
Twitter is the old. X is the new.
Twitter’s desktop version has lost its iconic blue bird icon. It is now replaced with a monochromatic, stark letter X. The company confirmed that the same change would be implemented on the mobile app in the near future.
It is said that the change also signals an evolution of the brand beyond social networking, into an “everything” app best compared with WeChat.
- “It is a rare opportunity to make a big impression in your life or business. Twitter has changed the way people communicate. “X will transform the global town square,” said Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino – or, rather, “x’ed”, Yaccarino as we have to learn.
- “X is the future of unlimited interaction – centered on audio, video and messaging. It creates a global market for ideas, products, services, opportunities, and goods. Powered by artificial intelligence, X will allow us to connect in ways that we can’t even imagine.
Why we care. The rebranding of X will require a change in vocabulary for users. The new “x” will replace “tweet”.
The change will highlight questions that marketers and advertisers have already raised regarding brand safety. Many sources reported a significant increase in hate speech over the past year. Meta’s Zuckerberg referred to X rival Threads as as being “friendly,” however, the aesthetic of X is inevitably minimalist and even brutalist. For example, when the new logo of X is projected onto the exterior of their HQ like a sinister Bat-signal.
The advertisers are gone. Since Musk purchased the platform, many advertisers with high-volume advertising have abandoned it or reduced their spending, leading to an estimated drop of 59% in Twitter’s U.S. Ad revenue.
X.X.com points now to twitter.com as Musk Tweeted.
Musk has a rich history with the letter. It’s clear that he loves it, but it remains to see if a wider audience finds the logo and name relatable.
