YouTube Shorts is launching a new set of tools that will encourage and inspire the creation of content.
Six new features allow creators to take advantage of a variety of new options on the platform. These include the ability to use Shorts live, remix footage, apply effects to videos, and add stickers.
The social platform also aims to increase reach by allowing live creators to be visible in the Shorts feed.
Why do we care? Brands can be more creative in their content production as they try out new features. This could improve engagement. Brands could improve their reach with the new vertical mobile pilot by sharing live videos on Shorts. In practice, improved reach and engagement will help brands achieve higher conversions and a better ROI.
What is new? There are six new features on YouTube Shorts:
- Collab This new feature enables creators to shoot a Short along with other YouTube or Short videos, in a side by side format. There are multiple layout options.
- Q&A Stickers – Content creators are able to use this feature to ask their viewers questions. The audience can leave their responses in the comments, which allows creators to shout them out as they can see the person who posted the response.
- Mobile first vertical live This new feature will enable live creators get discovered in Shorts feed. YouTube hopes this feature will allow creators to connect with live audiences and build communities more effectively.
- YouTube now offers automatic creation suggestions. YouTube will automatically combine audio and effects of a Short that you are remixing. As a suggestion, the platform can display the audio time stamp of the Short that you just watched and add the effect. The content creators can also mix and match.
- Shorts Playlist – Creators can save Shorts into playlists on YouTube.
- Convert horizontal videos into Shorts – This feature will be tested in the next few weeks. Users can now choose a horizontal video and change the layout, crop and zoom to make it a Short.
Why is it now? More than 2 billion logged in users view YouTube Shorts every month. It’s no surprise that Google wants to improve YouTube Shorts, given its rapid growth. The company is also looking to compete with TikTok, which has recently introduced new features for content creators.
What did YouTube say? YouTube announced the new tools in a blog post. A spokesperson stated:
- We introduced Shorts as a fun and lightweight way for creators to easily create and share short videos on YouTube. We will continue to explore new ways to tap into creators’ creativity.
- From remixing tools to help creators use content from YouTube’s billions videos to create new, original content, to expanding the YouTube Partner Program to allow creators to earn money with their Shorts, our goal is to make it easy for everyone to get involved and create what they enjoy.
- YouTube Shorts is now watched by more than 2 billion users who are logged in every month. Today, we introduce new ways to inspire imagination and creativity.
