Newegg announced that it now summarizes reviews of customers using ChatGPT.

Review Bytes, which are AI-generated summaries based on customer reviews, appear as a summary of the pros and cons.

Why do we care? This innovative use of AI for ecommerce could drive sales. In the age of Google’s review update, highlighting pros and cons makes sense. I’m expecting more ecommerce companies to offer similar experiences in the near future, because providing helpful and positive things to shoppers is also good for SEO.

Review Bytes. These Review Bytes were designed to allow shoppers to “understand the key aspects of products without having to read product reviews”. By clicking on a Review Byte, a Search Keyword is generated that highlights all full reviews that mention that specific pro or con.

SummaryAI. Under the Review Bytes pros and cons is a section titled SummaryAI. Newegg describes this AI-generated Summary as “a comprehensive paragraph summation” that “provides additional insights into the opinions of multiple customers with sentences to elaborate key points.”

When the Review Bytes feature will be available These features will only appear on Newegg desktop site when a certain minimum number of product reviews is reached. Newegg refused to disclose what the minimum number is and said that it could change depending on feedback from customers.

Amazon is ahead of the game. Amazon tested AI-generated summaries and product reviews before we did in June. Amazon’s AI feature is still not available.
