you need to Know about Setting Up Event Parameters in GA4

GA4 is a very valuable tool that provides extensive insight into the performance of your website.

Some metrics and dimensions are pre-configured, while others need partial or custom configuration by users.

It is also the case for event parameters. They allow us to get relevant information on actions that are taking place on our site.

While some of these parameters are predefined by GA4, the majority require configuration to ensure accurate collection.

What are the event parameters in GA4?

In GA4

A user can add an item to their cart or view a product.

You can use event parameters to create settings for the products that are being viewed or added to the shopping cart. These include the name, page, link, method, or price.

You can create custom metrics and dimensions using parameters. This will help you to better analyze the performance of your website.

Each event can have up to 25 parameters. The names of event parameters can be up to 40 characters long, while the values assigned must not exceed 100 characters.

Types of event parameters in GA4

GA4 has two different types of event parameters, depending on the way they are captured.

Automatically collect parameters

GA4 automatically collects the following parameters when you create a GA4 Property. These parameters provide additional information about events.

Check out the list for automatic parameters that GA4 provides to automatically collect events.

Custom Parameters

Custom parameters enable the capture of information not captured by default. Google suggests a different set of parameters depending on the type event:

You can see that most parameters need to be customized.

You can also use Google Tag Manager.

You can link these parameters to each event by sending them as custom dimensions. This will allow you to analyze events using the new parameter data.

You can do this by going to Admin -> Custom Dimensions -> Create custom dimension and creating one for each parameter.

You will not see them in the tool if you skip the step.

You can now view all the information about your events in Engagement > Event.

It can take several hours, or even days, to collect and display data.

Visit Google Tag Manager and click on Preview to see all the parameters that an event may have. Click on the event that you wish to measure. You can click on a hyperlink within your website, for example.

You will be able to see all the variables that are being triggered by the data layer. You can then identify which parameters are included in that particular action on the website.

You can see, for example, the following variables triggered by this Click. You can set them up as parameters.

How to configure event parameter via GA4

You can find out, for instance, what people search for when they use the search_term parameters on your website.

You can include the dimension region in this case to view each region’s top searched terms.

GA4 provides a number of predefined parameter sets that can be changed by the user if they are interested. This can be done in the same place where GA4 allows you to modify events.

To do so, go to Admin > Events > Modify Event.

Create reports that visualize event parameters

You can use the following parameters to create a report:

You can also incorporate these parameters into Looker Studio reports to allow you to analyze the data and examine it according to your specific business goals and requirements.
