rarian view: AI will not change your marketing career.
Artificial intelligence (AI), is a hype.
- The panacea for your business problems is not AI.
- Your team’s inefficiency will not be fixed by AI.
- AI won’t make you a superstar overnight.
AI is a new technology that has caught the public’s attention. Its impact on society is not yet known.
My argument that AI won’t change your job includes:
- Emotional intelligence is essential.
- Human relationships are important.
- The idea that AI is an aid, and not a substitute for humans.
Emotional intelligence over artificial intelligence
AI won’t change your people-related job. As technology advances, the ability to empower people to do their best and to know how to work with them remains unchanged.
While the current era of generative artificial intelligence is exciting and promising, it will not replace human interaction.
If this ever happens, we will have a bigger problem as a race.
Take a public speaking course or read up on how emotions affect decision-making instead of scrolling through social media to discover the latest AI hacks.
You will be a more well-rounded professional if you spend more time developing your “soft skills”, become a better “people person”, or improve your emotional intelligence (EQ).
Humans are emotional creatures who use reason to rationalize their largely emotional-driven decisions.
Life skills include being able to recognize how emotions affect your decisions and those of others, as well as using this information to improve interactions with other people.
It is impossible to overstate the importance of EQ in improving relationships with your co-workers and customers.
AI can be used to find data, craft messages and communicate a message. However, AI cannot predict or respond to emotional reactions from those who receive the message.
AI does not have emotions, but all human interactions must take into account the emotional component.
I choose EQ over AI every time.
Relationships that are human, not artificial
The most important skill you can have in your career is to develop, maintain, and grow relationships.
You will be working with people that do not know, trust, or offer help to you if you do not have this ability.
Lack of strong relationships can limit your chances of advancement within an organization. Your contribution will be overlooked or undervalued.
Working productively with others is essential to success. AI won’t change the importance that relationships play in your career.
AI doesn’t change your need to build relationships with customers.
AI can help you create creative messages by helping you to understand and extract insights from large datasets of customer data, but AI won’t replace the need to talk to your customers directly and collect their information.
What about chatbots What about chatbots?
I believe that AI chatbots should not and cannot replace humans. AI can be used to start a conversation in certain scenarios, but human interaction should always remain a part.
We all hate talking to bots or robots, but many businesses are putting reducing costs ahead of human connection.
Is AI making chatbots more convincing?
Some of them are so “advanced”, they can fool people into believing that they are speaking with a real person. But for what purpose?
AI will not replace the need to have a real relationship with your clients.
Marketers understand the importance of building relationships with customers because without them, they cannot create brands or drive sales.
AI is an aid for humans and not a substitute
The newest tool to hit the market is arguably Generative Artificial Intelligence.
It can also remove the human element from our messages by allowing marketers to create their own copy and creative. I think it can but not should.
You will miss out on the uniqueness of human creativity and quality if you use AI to completely remove the human element from your message.
AI can help you create content more efficiently. However, it cannot replace human content creators.
Spam is spam, whether it’s created by humans or AI.
The issues that Generative AI has with hallucinations giving incorrect information with confidence is well documented.
As technology advances, these hallucinations may decrease over time. However, AI will never provide a 100% accurate source of information. AI tools are created by imperfect humans using imperfect data.
AI is not a replacement for marketing. AI is a tool that marketers can use to help them do their job easier.
Search engines, crawlers and the dirty work of generative AI firms
Prioritize human beings over AI
It is important to note that I am not against AI. I use generative AI to accelerate tasks, brainstorm, conduct a research, create rough drafts etc.
AI is an excellent topic for marketers to explore and learn more about.
There are other, more important, things that you can do instead. For example, improving your EQ or building stronger relationships with co-workers and customers.
Your time and energy is limited. Prioritize the items that will help you achieve your goals.
AI can increase your efficiency at work but should not replace human interaction.
