ChatGPT for technical SEO
The value of integrating generative AI in search is compelling.
Search engine optimization could be revolutionized if SEOs can adopt this technology in a way that is effective. It will change the way people use search.
Although there are some concerns about the accuracy of AI generated content and omissions that lead to information being taken out-of-context, SEO expert Eric Enge explained the technology is still an excellent tool for saving time and inspiring creativity.
Here is a summary of how generative AI, presented by Enge during SMX Advance, can drive your technical SEO strategies.
1. Coding
Enge said that ChatGPT has a high level of coding proficiency. He explained:
- “Chat GPT is a great place to start for your code.” It can sometimes be buggy, and it needs to be debugged. But it’s really a good place to begin – and I recommend you use it that way.”
- “Remember, if you are using it to create schema markup it’s just a place to start. Make sure that you have someone to check the schema markup. “Generative AI speeds up the process.”
2. Generating Hreflang tags
Enge shared an example of a scenario where he used generative AI to create Hreflang tags for different webpages:
- “I spoke four languages. It generated a lot of tags that looked pretty good. “This is an example of [generative AI] helping you speed up things for you.”
3. Translation
When used to translate, Generative AI provides accurate results. Enge said:
- It produced some really good results.
- This sort of thing can really help you from the perspective of speeding up your business’s operations. These are pretty common applications.”
4. Implementing.htaccess Rules
Enge said that generative AI could also be used to speed up the implementation of.htaccess:
- “It’s not good to have someone claiming that they are GoogleBot but not being from an IP address of Google. It’s not good, and I’m not sure what harm it could cause. You can block them.”
- You can do a routine run-through to find out who is doing this to you, and then block them. It’s a good thing to know how to do.
5. Title tags: Creating them
Enge suggested using to generate creative title tags, but stressed that SEOs must also consider other factors before publishing any content:
- It came up with some great titles to use as potential prospects. It’s great to brainstorm ideas, but I’d recommend using search volume analysis as well because we don’t have this data from ChatGPT.
- “But this technology lets us just get an idea of what we want to the title from the users perspective – and that is an important perspective.”
6. Producing meta descriptions
Additional prompts are available to fine-tune meta description when generative AI is being used. Enge said:
- I just kept adding little tweaks to it and it suggested six different meta descriptions.
- “The best way for you to write a meta-description is to make it something that makes a user want to click on your result. We know this has no impact on the ranking. We want it to be enticing for the user, so they know what they will get if they choose your result. “Generative AI allows us to create examples closer to the ones we want to use.”
7. Summarizing content
Enge stated that generative AI was accurate in summarizing information as it only uses content you enter, leaving no room to confusion, date omissions, or false information.
- It’s great for summarizing the content, because it doesn’t cause hallucinations.
8. Keyword grouping
Enge shared with us examples of how he used ChatGPT prompts for classifying and grouping keywords. He added:
- It did a good job, although not perfect, of classifying keywords and groups according to their search intent in the commercial transaction.
- ChatGPT has done a great job in clustering keywords based on relevance. It was very accurate.
9. Content assistance
The Generative AI tool is another useful way to generate content ideas. ChatGPT can create a list with popular questions on a particular topic. This will give you a few article ideas.
- You can use this method when you are just starting to develop a new section on your website. It is important to consult a subject-matter expert for the specifics and don’t think that the list provided by the tool is exhaustive.
- It can also speed up the brainstorming process, and I find this to be a very interesting feature of this tool.
