le will make political ads reveal AI content

Google will require that political ads disclose the use of AI-generated audio, video and images. Google will soon require that political ads using artificial-intelligence be accompanied with a prominent disclosure when images or sounds are synthetically altered.

Google’s political content policy explains what happens if you don’t follow its rules: “Information about your account or political ads may be disclosed to the public, government agencies and regulators.”

Why do we care? Fighting fake news and improving online safety can boost trust in the Internet, which will ultimately lead to more people shopping online. Google’s proposal could have a drawback in that some accounts who may use “deep fakes” or similar tactics to distort truths may not take it seriously.

What will it look like? Political advertisements must include labels that act as red-flags if AI content is used, for example:

A disclaimer will not be required for campaigns that use AI to make “insignificant” changes, like small photo edits such as removing red eye.

Why Now? One year before the next US Presidential Election, new rules will be in place. Google’s spokesperson told BBC the move was made in response to the “growing prevalence of tools which produce synthetic content”.

This news comes just one week after X, the platform formerly known by Twitter, announced that it would bring back political ads in advance of the US elections 2024.
