le releases new report to flag checkout issues on online shopping sites
Google has released a report that helps brands identify checkout issues.
The Checkout Journey Report shows the number and percentage of users that successfully completed the checkout on your app or e-commerce website.
This report is based on a closed-funnel approach. It focuses only on users who began at the first step (Begin Checkout) and did not move to another step.
Why do we care? The report can be used to identify bottlenecks during the checkout process. This will help brands resolve issues quickly, leading to a better user experience and possibly more sales.
Accessing data. In order to view data in Checkout Journey, you must integrate ecommerce events into your store (website instructions or instructions for mobile apps). These events include:
-
start_checkout
: This populates Begin checkout step. -
Add_shipping_info
This fills out the Add shipping step. -
Add_payment_info
This information populates the Add Payment step. -
purchase
This populates the Purchase step.
Dimensions. To refresh and update dimension values in the table, you can select one of the dimensions below (which will be automatically populated).
- Browser The browser that the user’s activity was originated from.
- City : the city where user activity originated.
- Country The country where the user’s activity originated.
- Device Category:The type device that the user’s activity originates from.
- Language The name of the user’s device or browser language.
- Region The geographic region where the user’s activity originated.
Follow these simple steps to access Google’s Checkout Journey Report.
- Sign into your Google Analytics account.
- Select “Reports” from the menu to the left.
- The Checkout Journey report should appear on the left side of the collection Life cycle, in the topic Monetization or in the collection Business objectives, under the topic Drive online sales.
If you are still unable to see the report in your account, then it has either been removed or is not included in your default reports.

- Click “Reports”, located on the left-hand side of the screen, to access Google Analytics.
- Click “Library”, located at the bottom of the left navigation. If you do not see this option, then you are not allowed to customize the left-hand navigation.

- Find the report by clicking on “Drag a report to create a collection”.
- Drag the report to the collection of reports on the left.

What has Google said about the matter? Google’s spokesperson stated in a press release:
- Get a clear idea of how many users are completing each step of the funnel. Fix bottlenecks as soon as possible.
- The report will help you identify bottlenecks during the checkout process. If you see a drop in sales between the Add Shipping and Add Payment steps, you may want to look at issues with the shipping step. For instance, high shipping costs, or forcing users to log in without the option to checkout as guests.”
