chat now offers personalized responses

Microsoft Bing announced today at an AI event in NYC that it will be rolling out personalized responses within Bing Chat. Bing Chat personalized answers are based on your Bing history. Bing Chat has been testing a memory function. This is what Bing calls “personalized responses.”

Now, your chat history will inform your results. If you use Bing to follow your favorite soccer team and you plan a trip, it will tell you in advance if they are playing in the city you have chosen. You can disable this feature in Bing settings if you don’t want Bing to use your chat history for responses. Soon, personalized answers will be available.

How it works. Bing Chat uses your search history to provide a more personalized and fine-tuned answer. If you’re planning a trip and ask Bing chat which events I should attend, it may find them, as it knows that you are going or in Seattle.

Here’s a picture I took of a demonstration I gave at today’s event:

The app will also consider your location and location-based searches, as well as the fact that you searched for football events because of the Seattle Seahawks. You may also get suggestions for vegan restaurants or events in your area based on previous searches.

Here is the video that Microsoft released about this feature.

90-day history. Bing has said that it will only be using the last 90 days of chat/query history to personalize. If you delete certain queries or all of them, they will not appear in Bing Chat.

Why we care. Searchers can benefit from personalization. Over the years, search engine like Google and Bing have downplayed the use of personalization in search. Google Search uses the location and immediate previous query, but does not do much else to personalize search.

Perhaps personalized responses will be more helpful for chat.
