allows webmasters the option to block their content from Bing Chat.

Bing announced new controls that allow site owners and webmasters to prevent Bing Chat from utilizing their content for AI training or Microsoft’s generative AI model. Fabrice Canel, Microsoft , told us that while they are working with the industry to establish future AI standards, they also wanted more immediate support for their publishers.

Here are the controls. You can control Bing’s use of your content in Bing Chat and other Microsoft AI models.

• Bing chat does not require any action. Bing Chat may include content without NOCACHE and NOARCHIVE tags. This will allow AI to create more helpful answers, and increase your ranking in Bing Chat. Site content can be used to train our generative AI foundation model.
• Bing will only display URL/Snippet/Title in the answer. Bing will display only the URL/Snippet/Title as an answer. Microsoft’s generative AI models can only be trained using URLs, Titles, and Snippets for content that has been labeled “NOCACHE” in its Bing Index.
• The content tagged as NOARCHIVE won’t be included in Bing Chat responses, nor will it be linked in the answers. Bing will no longer use content that has been labeled as NOARCHIVE in its Bing Index to train Microsoft’s generative AI models.
• We will only treat content with NOCACHE tags if it has both.

Bing has added that search results will still include content marked with NOCACHE or NOARCHIVE tags.

Bing recommends that users add the NOCACHE and NOARCHIVE values to their Bing Chat settings in order to find articles behind paywalls.

Bigger initiatives. Google announced that it is working with the AI Community on an alternative robots.txt for AI models. Bing did not want to wait too long, and give control back to site owners now that AI is growing at such a rapid pace. Bing has decided to use what’s already available to give us choices on how Bing Chat or Microsoft can utilize our content.
