ok introduces five new ways to ensure safety for teens //

TikTok announced five new ways that teens can stay safe on the platform. These new policies will make it impossible to recommend borderline content or “suggestive”, which will be removed from TikTok’s For You feeds.

What’s new. TikTok is increasing enforcement of nudity and sexual activity.

1. Adopting policies regarding sexually suggestive content

TikTok policies are available for audiences younger than 13. These policies cover content categories that aren’t eligible for recommendation. This includes implied nudity and sensual content. TikTok claims that they continue to improve their technology for detecting these types of posts.

2. Innovative Content Levels

TikTok’s Content Levels system was introduced in 2022 by TikTok. It is intended to block content that has more mature or complex themes, such as profanity, innuendo or sexually suggestive content, from reaching audiences aged 13-17. These additional steps have prevented teens from seeing more than 1 million explicit videos within the past 30 days.

3. Automation

TikTok has invested in machine learning models in order to improve their consistency in detecting sexually explicit or suggestive content. TikTok claims:

We are making progress in reducing the number of suggestive or borderline content recommendations. Now, we launch the next iteration our borderline suggestive model. This will improve detection of such content and create a more comfortable and appropriate experience for teens account holders.

4. Partnerships

TikTok has teamed up with StopNCII.org to help stop the spread non-consensual intimate images. This collaboration will improve victim support and help stop content from being posted to the platform that was identified through StopNCII’s partnership.

5. Giving power back the creators

Audience controls were introduced last year to allow creators to limit their content to LIVE accounts that are over 18. Creators of short-form videos have begun to see the Audience Controls feature. The feature will be expanded globally in the coming weeks.

What TikTok has to say. TikTok’s goal is to ensure that our community, particularly teens, has a safe, positive, and joyful experience every time they visit TikTok.
