is the 17th anniversary of search marketing:

Google Speed Update: A new ranking algorithm for mobile searches

Google’s “Speed Update”, a new algorithm for ranking mobile searches, was announced in 2018.

We’re calling this the “Speed Update” and it will only impact pages that provide the slowest user experience. It will also only affect a small number of queries. The same standard applies to all pages regardless of how they were built. It is important to remember that the intent of the search query can still be a strong signal. A slow page might still rank high if it has great, pertinent content.

Google’s Zhiheng and Doantam Wang, Page speed in mobile search ranking

Google stated that page speed was a ranking element for desktop searches in 2010. Google had promised to examine mobile speed for many years before making this announcement.

Google announced that it will be reviewing the speed of mobile pages and using that ranking factor for mobile search starting in July 2018.

You can read all about it here: Google Speed Update: Page Speed will be a ranking factor for mobile search.

Google also responded to several Search Engine Land questions. We published them in: FAQs about new Google Speed Update pages, Search Console notifications, and desktop only pages.
