technical SEO report for 2023 reveals the most important things in SEO

Digital marketing agency Aira has released the State of Technical SEO Report 2023. This report is also available from the Women in Tech SEO community. What is the future of technical SEO in 2023? Here are some of the most interesting results.

Resources are important. The report identified the greatest risk as an organizational shortage of resources. Insufficient resources can lead to changes that don’t happen or take too long, which could result in poor SEO results. Prioritizing tasks is crucial if resources are scarce in a company.

Technology that matters. Google Search console was used by 92% of technical SEOs. It was also used by 78 percent of users to measure organic search rankings.

Popular choice for crawling and analysis of log files was the Screaming Frog SEO spider. Semrush was the best choice to assess a website’s search visibility.

Technical SEOs prefer WordPress over other ecommerce platforms. Wix was deemed the most difficult to work on.

Time is important. 88% of respondents said they waited for technical SEO updates for between a month and 24+ months.

It is not surprising that 22% of respondents reported waiting just one month for technical SEO changes. 20% waited 12 months, which was slightly lower than the previous year. 11% reported that they waited for 24 months or more.

The skills that matter. Which three skills should a technical SEO have? The respondents were as follows:

  1. Data analysis (72%)
  2. Understanding HTML/CSS (58%)
  3. Content strategy (39%)

It was quite surprising to see content strategies ranked so high. Steph Greaves highlighted this in the report comments.

Technical SEO = Marketing. Search Engine Land contributor Mark Jackson argued that is marketing. It was pleasing to see that marketing (74%) was the top answer for this specific in-house question: “In which organisation does technical SEO accountability reside?”

Go deeper. There is more. Here’s the complete report The State of Technical SEO 2023
