Webmaster Guidelines Updated for Conversation Mode and AI //

Microsoft has updated the Bing webmaster guides in conjunction with an announcement about the new AI-powered search feature in Bing Search. Microsoft has announced an AI-powered search engine that users can use to chat, ask questions and even create content.

This means that Bing has added new guidelines to webmasters regarding “conversation mode,” answers, and “Bing picture creator.”

What was added. Bing has added a section to its Bing webmaster guidelines titled “Conversation Mode” and “Bing Image Creator.”

“The new Bing conversation mode is built on the existing Bing experience and provides users with a new type search interface. Bing conversation mode generates replies using an AI model that has been trained by reading a lot of text on the Internet. The model generates an output that is consistent, relevant, and creative based on the prompt or user query. The output could be a response or a web result, as well as a poem, story, code, essay, song, or any other form that can be expressed naturally in natural language. Bing Image Creator uses an AI model that learns from processing large numbers of images on the Internet. The model generates an image based on the user’s prompt. To improve performance and accuracy, the conversational model also uses context information, such as feedback and web results. The main web search results page is used to rank conversation mode.

These features are governed by the Terms and Conditions as well as the Codes of Conduct.

What was changed. Bing also updated “Answers”, it now reads:

“Bing may add additional features to the results page in order to offer a richer search experience. Bing will answer the question “How high is the Eiffel Tower?” with a response of “300m”. Bing will return a summary answer and links to the sources for some queries.

Bing may provide relevant information about a business if the query is related. This includes store hours and location. Bing Places for Business is a tool that allows business owners to verify and claim existing listings. This service is only available in a few markets. It can be used by listing owners to edit, delete or modify their listing information. To enhance user experience, Bing might partner with third-party content providers such as local restaurant reviews sites.

Why we matter. We need to be aware of how search engines adapt and change as marketers and SEOs. We can also get clues from the UX, features and modifications that search engines make.
