ted: Google Search Console Users and Permissions Management
Google has updated the Google Search Engine permissions and user management feature to include functionality related to owner and user management. These features were present in the older Google Webmaster Tools, and have been updated to the current Google Search Console.
What’s new. These features were added by Google to Google Search Console’s permissions and user management.
- Differentiating between delegated and verified owners
- It is easier to immediately remove verified owners (no need for them to take their ownership token).
- Ability to modify permission levels delegated owners (owner, full or restricted).
- You can view the verification tokens of your property for all users, current and past, and see any tokens left by previous owners
- History of ownership events
This is how it looks. This is the screenshot that Google shared in a blog post about its updated management interface.
Permission best practices. Google has also shared some best practices in permission and user rights:
- Give only the access that is necessary for that person to do his/her work.
- When an individual does not require access, you can update or revoke access.
- Regularly check and update the permissions page and the user permissions in Search Console.
- Share reports on a single-off basis using the share link
Why we care. These permission updates will give you more control over who can access which areas of your Search Console profiles. Google stated that it was important to review any remaining ownership tokens to ensure that no one can regain access to the property from the removed owners. To learn which access levels are granted, be sure to read the new help documentation as well as permission level.
