le Discover visibility can now be affected by Google Helpful Content System

Google has updated search documentation to state that the Google useful content system could impact visibility of your site in Google Search and Google Discover. This surprise came as a surprise to me, since Google has not yet communicated the change. We have also received a few helpful content updates from Google Discover since that first communication.

Updated communication. Google has updated this document to state that the system generates a sitewide signal, which we consider as one of many signals for Google Search (which also includes Discover). The system automatically detects content that appears to be of low value, low-added or not very helpful for people.

Previous communication. Previously, when Google first launched, <a href="https://searchengineland.com/googles-new-helpful-content-update-targets-sites-creating-content-for-search-engines-first-387237#:~:text=Search%2Donly%20right,the%20coming%20months. They stated that the helpful content system/update only affected Google Search visibility and not Google Discover. Google informed us that the helpful content update/system only affected Google Search visibility, not Google Discover.

I don’t know when exactly this happened, but I did ask Google.

Other ranking systems. Other ranking systems from Google also affect the visibility of websites in Google Discover. Google has confirmed that Google Discover visibility was affected by algorithm updates such as Google core update, and other systems.

Google has updated its Discover help page to state that “As part Google Search, Discover uses many the same signals, systems, and methods as Search to determine useful, people-first material.” If you want to be successful with Discover, we recommend that you review our guidance on how to create helpful, reliable, and people-first content.

Older version stated that “Our automated systems surface material in Discover from websites that have many individual webpages that demonstrate expertise and authority (E-A–T). If you are looking to improve EA-T, these questions can be asked by site owners. Although Search and Discover may be different, the general principles of E-A-T that apply to content within these sites are similar.

Why we care. You may be able attribute any visibility changes you noticed in Google Discover, positive or negative.
