Google Panda Update 3.3 Venice

Google announced the Panda Update 3.3 in 2012 and a notable change to local search rankings.

Panda 3.3 was a refresh to the Panda system. This meant that none of the signals Panda examined were new or had changed.

Google Panda was the news of the moment, but there was more. Google called it “Venice”, and it focused on improvements in local search results.

Ranking improvements for local search results. This improvement increases the triggering of Local Universal Results by relying more heavily on the ranking of our main searches results as a signal.

This:

Better local results. A new system was launched to locate results more accurately from a user’s location. We are now better equipped to identify when queries and documents are located near the user.

This was a major local search update.

Google’s algorithm would localize search results for users who had broad queries with local intent. This was completely different from pre-Venice. Simply put:

In the past, a search like’seo’ or ‘jacket’ would only return Google’s non-local results set. Now Google will include results specific for your location (regardless of whether you’ve actively set it: Google will find you based upon your IP address).
