h 2, 2009 – This is the day in search marketing history
Yahoo! Happy Birthday! Yahoo!
Yahoo! was founded in 1995. Yahoo! was founded in 1995.
I was close to using the March 1 edition Of This day in search history, to wish Yahoo a happy birthday. Particularly after seeing our 2010 story, Happy birthday, Yahoo!
Why was it that Yahoo’s birthday was the only headline on Search Engine Land? It could have been because we discussed a Yahoo blog post (Happy Birthday Yahoo! From Jerry and David! It was posted March 1, and included the words “as us celebrate 15 years today.”
Things continued to be confusing as we dug deeper into our archives:
- Yahoo celebrates its 13th birthday; will there be a 14th? – published March 5, 2008. (Refers to a Yahoo photo shared via Flicker March 4, 2008, which was totally unhelpful.
- Yahoo celebrates its 14th birthday – published February 2 2009, 2009. (“Yahoo celebrates its 14th Birthday …”)
- Yahoo Turns 16 Year Old – Published March 2, 2011, (“On March 1, 2011 Yahoo turned 16 years of age.” This is because Yahoo marked its ” Sweet16” date on March 1, 2011.
- Yahoo Marks 20 Years of Birthday by Setting a New World Record for Yodeling,” published March 3, 2015. (Yahoo’s birthday was …” yesterday, i.e. March 1).
Yahoo gave away Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream for its 10th Birthday on March 2, 2005. Yahoo shared 25 years of milestones on social media on March 2, 2020.
To find out what Yahoo Search (powered by Microsoft Bing), would tell me, I went to Yahoo search for my first time in a very while. It was no surprise that Wikipedia also agreed with me about March 2.
Yahoo’s “official birthday” seems to be March 2, and not March 1. It could be argued, however, that neither of these birthdays is Yahoo’s “real” birthday.
The company was actually founded in 1994. In April 1994, Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web were renamed Yahoo! The domain Yahoo.com was also registered on January 18, 1995.
Let’s not confuse the situation by mentioning Yahoo Search’s birthday (Feb. 18, 2004).
It doesn’t really matter what Yahoo’s “real birthdate” is. This was already the case with Google. (See: Google is 10 years old? Google celebrates its birthday each September 27th.
We wish Yahoo a happy Birthday today. On March 2. As it should be.
It seems that Yahoo’s search team will long for a search return this year.
