launches paid verification
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO at Meta, has just announced that Meta Verified, the company’s paid verification programme, is now available in the United States.
It works. It provides users with a blue verification button on Facebook and Instagram. Users also have “proactive impersonation protection” as well as direct access to customer service. Meta Verified is $12 per month when accessed via the internet, and $15 per monthly if accessed using iOS or Android. This account accounts for in-app payments cuts on these platforms. Subscribers will also receive stars to tip Facebook creators and extra stickers for Stories and Reels.
Initial testing. The program was launched in Australia and New Zealand by Meta last month. Verified is different from Twitter Blue, which allows users to purchase a blue checkmark or other perks. Meta Verified requires that users provide a piece government ID that matches their name and photo.
After a user has been verified, they can’t change their profile name, photo, username or date of birth without going through the verification process all over again. Accounts that have been verified previously on Instagram and Facebook will retain their blue checkmark.
Meta’s statements. Meta Verified was launched as part of its efforts to improve security and transparency on its platforms. Meta hopes to decrease the number of fake accounts on Instagram and Facebook by providing users with a blue verification tag and proactive impersonation protection.
Meta could be rolling this program out to improve security. One reason they could be doing this is to diversify or generate more revenue streams. After all, they did blame weak advertising demand for the recent drop in revenue. This area accounts for 97% of their total revenue.

Why we care. This new verification may help improve the authenticity and quality of the platform’s users. Meta could be able to verify government IDs and ensure users are authentic. This will help reduce fake accounts and bots. This could lead to a larger and more authentic user base which can in turn result in more effective advertising.
