ways to create quality backlinks on any website
A successful strategy on one website might not work for another.
The technique used for a site that is heavily focused on information may result in fewer links than the one for a page that focuses on ecommerce products or localized services.
These techniques can be applied to almost any situation. The scale of the technique will vary depending on a variety of factors.
Before we go into the strategies you should make sure you’re using the best one for your business.
Do I have the right link-building strategy?
Each website is a little bit different. The variables may be due to company structure, marketing strategy or website niche.
A website may have a harder time building links than another due to a number of factors.
Here is a list with the most important questions that will help you decide which technique and scale to use based on your website’s present situation.
A litmus Test for Link Strategy
- What are the topics that you can discuss?
- What kind of websites will receive links?
- Is it easier or more difficult to use specific link-building techniques in your niche?
- Your website is in the “Your Money or Your Life (YMYL).
- How competitive are you keywords?
- What kind of content are you currently offering? What are your content capabilities or what is the current state of your content?
- What pages would you like to rank?
- What are your outreach and prospecting capabilities? Are you using an agency or a team in-house?
- Have you got a following on social media? Will your content be shared naturally by others?
- Do you focus on local, national or international?
- Have you got the time and the resources to implement the link-building strategy?
Before selecting a strategy for link building, you should ask yourself these questions. Understanding these variables can help you to create more links, or links that lead to your target pages.
The type of website is the one that has the greatest impact on the technique used. Let’s take a closer look at how to choose pages for link-building.
Selecting pages to link by website type
Websites can have wildly different content types or require different pages in order to rank.
Unlike many e-commerce sites, some sites produce very little informational material, while other sites build their entire marketing strategy around the production of informational materials, such as educational affiliate sites.
List of the most popular types of websites
Affiliate Websites
These sites come in a variety of forms including blogs, coupons, product lists, product directories and reviews, as well as shopping comparisons, review sites and product directories. These sites usually need links back to articles or brand listings pages.
For affiliate websites, you can use any of the techniques below, but in general, guest posting, resource pages links and competitor link building are very effective.
Market or directory
These sites are used to facilitate transactions between buyers and sellers. Etsy is one example, as are Upwork and Themeforest.
Using the following strategies, you can create links that will take users directly to informational articles or listing pages.
Ecommerce
To improve rankings, an ecommerce website may want to link to product, brand or category pages. This is one of the hardest pages to get links from.
When done correctly, guest posting, competitor linking, resource pages and image link building can be used to build links on almost any page.
My favorite technique involves finding brand mentions that are not linked to the products on a site. If an ecommerce website sells Nike Shoes, then find articles that mention Nike Shoes and request a link.
A direct-to consumer CPG ecommerce website may have lots of content which can be used to build links.
Create content designed to build links using the skyscraper method.
Online Training and Certificates
Links to enrollment pages can help improve rankings on these websites. These links may be difficult to secure but use techniques similar to those used in ecommerce.
The following are some of the Universities that you can contact
Professors at brick-and mortar and online universities can likely write a lot authoritative content.
Citing reputable sources is a common practice in blogs, and this can be a great way for universities to gain links. These sites often have blogs, but they need links to their program pages.
I have found that linking to program pages from informational pages, and internal links back to those pages can produce a large number of links.
Direct-to consumer CPG
Content is important for websites that sell consumer packaged goods directly to consumers. They also have an ecommerce area.
They also tend to spend lots of time building up brand awareness.
These brands can benefit from strategies such as guest posting, brand mentions without links, image linking, product samples and blogger roundups.
Links are best placed on informational articles and ecommerce sites.
I would highly recommend leveraging HARO in conjunction with a CPG.
National with a Local Focus
Link building presents unique challenges for a company that has a national footprint but targets local keywords. The sites have pages for each location which are ideal for linking.
Travel bloggers or local bloggers have had great success in finding links to location pages.
Consider creating content that is long and in-depth, to help you rank for keywords at a national level. Do not limit yourself to local keywords. You will develop a natural and diverse link profile.
SaaS (B2B and B2C).
You can easily find information on the web for large or small technology companies, or startups.
Links to these pages can be obtained by building links with competitors, posting guest posts and using resource pages. Resource links may lead to a homepage or product, but are still great links.
Local services
Local businesses have less resources for producing content. However, the primary focus is on the service , home , or location .
Local sites that are active at local events can be a good source for “low-hanging fruits” links.
can still secure links by using digital PR, competitor linking building, and roundup articles that target local businesses.
It makes sense for travel bloggers to list your business on their website and link back to your site on the pages that discuss your city.
The strategies listed below are applicable to any type of website. If the site has an active content-marketing program, certain strategies may work better.
Ten high-quality strategies for link building
1. Distribute content via blogger relationships
After opening my business, I began building relationships with bloggers.
This strategy focuses on reaching out to bloggers, authors or publishers via email and securing links by leveraging those relationships.
A cold email may only receive 1-5 response rate.
Some of the best ways to get a publisher or an author’s attention include:
- Meeting at events.
- Free Broken Link Analysis of the site.
- Advertisement or sponsorship on the website.
- Contributing to the community.
- Share an exciting story.
- Sending out free samples of products
2. Guest posting of high quality and with natural links
Guest posting is a method that can be used to either find guest posting opportunities for members of a team or build relationships with current contributors.
It’s easy for you to waste your time by writing low-quality articles. Instead, use it wisely to contribute to quality sites.
The easiest way to find guest posting opportunities is to go to Google with the search operator keyword intitle: “write for us”/”guest author”/”contributor.” Next, go through the list of articles and start pitching ideas.
3. Cold outreach is a powerful tool for building links with competitors
One of my favorite strategies to secure links is to link only to your competitors’ sites.
There are many tools that have huge databases of links, including Ahrefs and Majestic.
The tools have features that allow you to easily enter several competitors and get a list referring domains, links, etc.
Use a tool such as PitchBox or Buzzstream for a list. Then, start outreach.
4. Links to skyscraper images from the top ranking sites
This technique was popularized by Brian Dean.
- Analyzing the top ranking sites for a keyword.
- Content that is unique compared to top ranking articles.
- Contacting the sites that link to these articles.
- You can ask them to update the link between you and their site.
Then, choose a topic that is popular, do some research on the best content, and create a comprehensive version.
Last, ask bloggers and influencers within your niche for links to your content.
5. Journalists pitching HARO or #journorequest
These campaigns can be more effective if they target journalists or bloggers who are looking for data, sources, and information to write upcoming articles.
Use lists of pitch requests like the #journorequest Twitter hashtag or Help a Reporter Out list. Develop a pitch for a subject matter expert within your company and identify relevant requests.
You can then contact the writer by email, post a comment in the #journorequest thread or tweet directly to them.
6. Links to resource pages on the homepage or internal page
This approach uses existing resource page to list websites, articles or products and other assets in order to provide readers with valuable resources.
You can start by researching using Google, Ahrefs, or BuzzStream.
You can use the search operators below to upload the list to Ahrefs Batch Analysis Tool, export it, and filter out domains with low Domain Ratings (DR). Then upload the list to BuzzStream for emails and outreach.
- “keyword” + inurl:resources
- “keyword” + intitle:resources
- “keyword” + intitle:links
- “keyword” + “useful resources”
- “keyword” + “useful links”
You can replace “keyword” by your chosen keyword(s) and/or niche-related terms.
7. Image linking through reverse image search
This strategy can be used to create links to a website which already uses images from your site, but must be correctly cited.
Once you have identified these images, reach out to the site owner and ask for a proper citation as well as a link. This method works best when the site contains a large number of images that are unique, and preferably custom-created.
To find the URL of the image, start by searching for it in Google Images and TinEye. Click on the image.
Use the forms on the site or upload the list of sites to BuzzStream and begin outreach.
8. Universal unlinked mention
The term “unlinked brand” was used to describe the process of finding mentions of a company’s main brand that are not linked.
Nevertheless, I define “unlinked mentions”, as any mention of a company, its products/services or competitors, even if it is a topical article.
This modification to the unlinked mentions strategy now includes more keywords. It is applicable to almost all websites, including affiliate websites, ecommerce brands, CPGs, Saas and startups.
9. Ranking statistical keywords can help you earn links.
Articles with unique statistics can make outreach for link building much more effective. They can also earn links if they rank well for keywords that include “statistics” and “study”.
Bloggers and journalists search for data and sources to use in their articles. Many start by searching terms such as “SEO statistics.” They can be used to secure links without sending an email.
Ahrefs’ article 78 SEOS Statistic for 2023, for example, ranks at Google position 1 in “seo stats” and has over 2,000 domain links.
Create a list of words that are similar to [keyword] plus “statistics”, “study” or other keywords. Google the keyword to see what types of studies come up.
Create a summary of the most popular articles online, or create a new research.
10. Link Building with Podcast Websites
Not all podcasts have websites. Look for podcasts that have websites, where they reuse or promote the content.
Podcasts can be a great way to increase brand awareness. However, the goal is to get a link on your website that will improve ranking.
Google [keyword]+podcasts in your chosen niche to find a website that hosts podcasts. Visit the website and make sure they have summarized the episodes of the podcasts into an article.
Listen to the podcasts on this list to get a better understanding of their perspective.
Engage with hosts or guests via social media before preparing your pitch.
Link building strategies that work for any niche
Link building is essential for a successful SEO campaign across a wide range of niches.
Understanding the unique features of your site and niche will help you to tailor your approach in order to get the best links.
These strategies can be used for a variety of website types including affiliate websites and e-commerce platforms. They are also applicable to local businesses, universities, or university websites.
You can improve your rankings and traffic by asking the right questions, selecting the correct technique and implementing it.
