le will replace Core Web Vitals metrics FID and INP with INP

Google announced today at Google I/O that Interaction to Next Paint will replace First Input Delay as a Core Web Vitals Metric starting March 2024.

Google <a href="https://searchengineland.com/core-web-vitals-scores-research-386036#:~:text=First%20Input%20Delay%20(FID)%20%E2%80%93%20interactivity%2C%20target%20100%20milliseconds.%20(Note%3A%20Google%20announced%20in%20May%20that%20it%20might%20replace%20FID%20with%20a%20new%20metric%20called%20INP%20%E2%80%93%20Interaction%20to%20Next%20Paint). This change has been hinted at for a little over a year. Now is the official.

What is the Interaction with Next Paint? INP is an metric which uses data from Event Timing API. It measures the responsiveness of an online page.

Google stated that an interaction which causes a web page to be unresponsive will result in a bad user experience. INP measures the latency for all interactions that a user makes with the page. It then reports one value, which is the average of all interactions (or almost all).

Google gave the following examples of poor and good responsiveness:

The accordion cannot be opened on the left because of the long tasks. The user will click repeatedly, believing that the experience has been broken. The main thread will process the delayed inputs when it catches up. This results in the accordion unexpectedly opening and closing.

Rankings impact. Martin Splitt wrote that Google has reiterated the fact that Core Web Vitals does not guarantee good ranking in Google Search.

Google’s core ranking system includes a good page experience. Core Web Vitals is a way to determine if you are achieving a positive page experience, even though it’s not a ranking signal.

Google, however, uses other signals in its core ranking system, besides Core Web Vitals, to determine what constitutes a good experience on a page.

Danny Sullivan, Google Search Liaison told Search Engine Land that there are many factors to consider when designing a page, some of which can be found on the page. While not all aspects are directly used to determine ranking, they generally correlate with search ranking success and are worth paying attention.

What’s changing? Google will replace FID with INP as part of Core Web Vitals by March 2024. Google Search Console is going to include INP as part of the Core Web Vitals Report later this year, so that you can begin measuring your INP scores.

Google Search Console will no longer show FID metrics when INP replaces FID by March 2024. Instead, it will use INP.

Timeline for INP change

Why we care. Many SEOs, to their benefit or not, have spent a great deal of time on Core Web Vitals (CWD) and FID scores. These same SEOs are likely to shift their focus away from FID and towards INP. Google has a guide on and how to optimize INP.

Overall, I recommend that you not get too bogged down by these metrics. Google even says that they are only one factor to consider when trying to improve the page experience of your website.

When browsing your site, you will know if it is fast and responsive. It’s not always necessary to use a third party tool to find out. Make excellent websites for your users, but don’t obsess over these scores.
