Working on too many projects is one of the biggest challenges marketers face today. I have never met a marketer who is bored. The constant demands of stakeholders to change their minds and ask for more results in a lot of work being started, but not much actually completed and delivered to the customers.

It’s easy for people to confuse being busy with delivering value to customers. It doesn’t really matter how busy an individual marketer is. You might be wasting a lot effort if it takes weeks or months for customers to see your efforts.

Discuss some ways to stop starting work and finish it.

1. Trade-off discussions

It is easier to control the constant starting of new projects by having trade-off discussions with your stakeholders. This is especially true for those with multiple marketing requests. We’re so used to saying yes to every request that we don’t even realize the impact. Here’s a better way to approach a request than passively accepting it.


“Jen, I saw that your request for a blog post was received today. You requested it be done by the weekend. We are currently working on your request to create a social media paid ad. We’ll miss our deadline if we stop working. What is your top priority? ?”

You can force the person requesting to make difficult decisions by having a trade-off conversation. You can also have this conversation if you have several stakeholders, each of whom has a request that is more important than the others.


“Dan, today we received your request for a presentation on slides for your next sales meeting. We’re working on other projects this week. You can choose to receive a template and create your own or start your project the following week. Which would you prefer ?”

2. Measure your flow

Your team could be suffering because of the inability to finish work due to a stalemate within your current workflow. You may be waiting on legal approval so that you can move onto the next project. It’s difficult to return to the previous project once you have received the necessary sign-off. It is important to get ahead of this problem, as it can be a major hindrance in productivity.

You can measure the flow of your team by walking them through every step they take to complete a task. Let’s say, for example, that finishing a blog post has become a real challenge. Each person involved in the project should meet to map out the workflow.

The time shown is in duration and not the actual number of days or hours required to complete a task. It will take only 10-15 minutes for a manager to read and approve an article. It may take a manager three days to read and approve an article.

It’s time to talk about ways to streamline the workflow when everyone sees it laid out in this way. Maybe you could set up a policy that all approvals have to be done within 24 hours. You may need to hire someone outside your team for coding and publishing, but by training someone within your team, the time could be reduced from five to just one day.

3. Set WIP Limits

Set limits on the amount of work in progress (WIP), and your team will be able to focus on completing what is currently being done before starting new tasks. You can do this informally, by training your team to focus on what they can complete before starting new work. Personal, I make it a point to complete a task before moving onto the next one. The less dependencies a team has, the better.

It’s possible to do it in a more formal manner. This is one of six practices that make up the Agile Market Navigator framework. This method allows the team to set its WIP limit. The team might decide to limit the number of items on the visual board. The team is forced to complete what has already been started.

The team will determine the number by determining how they can work without interruption or stopping. They may decide that five tasks in progress is too much and agree to reduce it to four. The team will experiment with the number of items until they find a way to move work at the fastest possible pace.
