r Twitter’s rebrand, ad labels are ‘less visible’.
X has changed the appearance of ad label on promoted posts to make them “less visible.”
Twitter Ads (X-Ads?) The word “Ads” is now displayed in the upper right corner of all posts, just below the three-dot navigation button.
In the past, “Promoted”, along with a arrow icon, would appear at the bottom-left corner of the posts.
Why we care . This is similar to the PPC ads that Google and Microsoft use in their search result pages. This change may result in more clicks and engagements, but it does not mean that more conversions will follow. Watch your key metrics if you are running Twitter/X Ads.
What has X’s user base said? Users are not impressed by the new layout. This is typical for any social media platform change. The new layout, according to many X users, makes ads appear less like advertisements and more like natural posts. Here are some reactions from X users.
- They made it easier to scroll past advertisements. It used to be that I had to scroll down to the bottom to realize it was an advertisement. It’s now at the top.”
- Instant block all ads.
- The block button is now closer.
- “As a response, I have stopped scrolling past the ads and I now block every single ad that I see.”
Is this a test or is it permanent? The X company has not yet commented on the change in ad labels. It is possible that social media platforms are testing this new format via text before making a permanent change. We’ll wait and see.
Why now? This move is part of X’s efforts to entice advertisers to return to the platform after a 59% decline in ad revenues following Musk’s takeover. Last week, X announced that it would be offering huge discounts for video ads. This change in ad labels may be part of X’s strategy to attract brands back. However, given the reactions from users, it may not be a good idea.
