opolitan Museum of Art launches Roblox as an augmented reality experience
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is about to become meta. Replica is a hybrid experience launched by the museum that lets visitors “capture” art works from its collection to show them off on Roblox.
The experience was created by UNIT9, a multidisciplinary company, Verizon and Ode to Joy in partnership with Roblox.
How the app works. Starting August 3, visitors at The Met can use their smartphones to scan a variety of famous masterpieces.
The user will then receive a digital copy of the artifact that can be used in the Roblox virtual world as a wearable.
Replica is available to download for free on iOS and Android devices.
Grab your straw hats. Thirty seven objects from the museum collection of 1.5 millions pieces were selected to experience.
Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait in a Straw Hat and the Armor of Henry II King of France are among the objects selected. Also included is the Statuette Anubis (332-30 B.C.). The Japanese Helmut, or Zukinnari Kabuto from the Momoyama Period is also included.
Over 30 galleries are divided into nine curatorial sections, making it a challenge to “collect them all.”
In app clues. Within the app, the user will be guided by clues on a map.
The objects will appear in virtual form on Roblox once they are scanned with a phone. The avatar of the Roblox player can wear or use the digital reproductions.
The experience is complete when Roblox users are able to visit a virtual recreation in the game of The Met, which includes the well-known facade on Fifth Avenue as well as The Great Hall with its expansive staircase.
Why do we care? Last year, Roblox had a lot of activations, which in marketing terms, is like Tudor times. is very popular in the art industry. Art lovers can use their smartphones as an extra set of eyes in order to view art in new and augmented ways.
The Met’s Replica Experience appears well-thought out. It enhances the experience in the museum while allowing visitors the opportunity to continue this experience even after their visit through their digital lives.
