Google expressed its opposition to two bills currently being debated in Congress: the Protect IP Act, (PIPA), and the Stop Online Piracy Act(SOPA). Many were concerned that the legislation would restrict the internet and harm U.S. companies.

Pierre Far, Google’s 2012 vice president of product management, also revealed that GoogleBot would crawl at a lower rate today to ensure that Google results from websites that participated in the blackout will not be affected.
