Google has updated the video Indexing Report in Google Search Engine to improve error reporting. Google stated that you may see “missing thumbnails” errors being reclassified under the new error types. Google stated that the total number reported errors should not change and that this is a reclassification.

January 19, 2023. This change took effect today, January 19, 2023.

Google’s statement. Google stated, “Search Console is now able to more accurately classify thumbnail-indexing issues. You may notice a reassignment to “Missing thumbnails” issues to other issue types. It is expected that the total number of affected videos will remain the same.

What’s the video indexing report? The video indexing report will show you how many pages have one or more videos and how many pages could contain a video. Google stated that the report could help you to understand how your videos perform on Google and pinpoint areas for improvement.

This is what it looks like. This is a screenshot from the report I created for one of my sites using Google Search Console.

The report will be displayed. Google stated that if Google detects video on your website, the Video Indexing report will be displayed on the left navigation bar under the coverage section. The report will not be displayed if Google hasn’t detected any video on your site.

What it says. This report displays the status of your site’s video indexing. This report helps answer the following questions.

Google also explained that if you resolve an existing issue, the report can be used to verify the fix and track the progress of your video pages.

Why we care. It might be worth rechecking some errors in the report to see if they were changed from “missing thumbnails” to another error type. You can then fix any errors that may not have been fixed earlier.
