is the 18th anniversary of search marketing history
Yahoo has stopped using Google search
Yahoo! stopped using Google’s web searches results in 2004 and created its own index and ranking system.
Yahoo had bought Inktomi December 2002. However, Yahoo decided to create its own web search engine. Yahoo relied on Google to search for images, and News search was a mix of Yahoo’s editorial and technological resources.
Yahoo’s results were of high quality at that time. What was being indexed?
Yahoo Search index captures the entire text of web pages up to 500k limit. This is more than the 101K limit Google allows for. The mix includes a wide range of file types including HTML, PDF and Microsoft Office documents.
What is the size of Yahoo’s index They don’t say, despite Google’s announcement yesterday of an increase in its index to almost 4.3 billion documents (six billion if you include images and newsgroup postings as Google does).
In almost all my tests using random queries, Yahoo reported more results than Google. This could indicate that Yahoo’s index has a larger reach. It could be, but the reported results are only estimates and not exact counts. They can also include other factors than keyword matches, making them notoriously inaccurate measures of overall index size. It suffices to say that Yahoo indexes are comparable to Google for most queries.
