GPT is your secret weapon in SEO content editing //
The majority of talk about generative AI and SEO focuses on content creation. Tools like ChatGPT are useful for other functions, beyond the creation of blog posts.
The SEO content lifecycle includes editing and refreshing content. This article explains how ChatGPT can help with SEO content editing.
ChatGPT allows you to edit content
Here are some caveats when using ChatGPT for content editing:
- ChatGPT can sometimes generate answers that sound correct (especially if you aren’t familiar with the topic), but they can be completely incorrect. Before publishing, a human must continuously review the outputs of ChatGPT.
- ChatGPT uses data from 2021 and earlier. ChatGPT cannot crawl the web at the time of writing so any information it generates could be out-of-date.
- Google stated that there is no penalty for using AI content, as long as it is helpful. Google has not yet stated that AI content will always be easily detected.
Let’s now look at what ChatGPT can accomplish despite these limitations.
Search intent rewriting
Let’s say our site is primarily focused on the travel industry. We want a writer to publish a new article about flight costs.
ChatGPT could rewrite the blog with a greater focus on searcher intent.
This is what the first paragraph looked like before and after:
ChatGPT could be dialed in a little more to aid with intent. We could do things like:
- ChatGPT can get a better understanding of the search query by sharing the title tags for the top ten results.
- Share the content or a summary of it for the first or few results that Google returns in the SERP.
- You can share some of the suggestions Google gives you when you search for the topic. People may also ask related questions.
ChatGPT can only remember 3000 words of a conversation if you give ChatGPT this much information. It is possible to limit the amount of information you provide in one conversation.
You could try them all in your own chats, and then compare the results to determine which one you like best.
Use best practices for your intros
ChatGPT can also be used to go beyond the searcher intent. Let’s take the example of an article introduction.
Let’s follow Jamie I.F.’s guidelines for writing introductions.
Let’s try getting ChatGPT to rewrite our newly search-intent-focused blog intro using the S.P.E.A.R. method:
Uh-oh! ChatGPT seemed to understand the basics of the framework from the gate. But then, it took a wrong turn and mentioned the framework.
ChatGPT is a great tool for assisting people with complex problems. It’s almost like an overwhelmed or tired employee!
Try to simplify your prompts and break them down.
This is a great reminder that you should always review your ChatGPT output and make any necessary edits!
Optimizing for featured shortcodes
ChatGPT allows me to share best practices in optimizing content for featured snippets. I can also ask ChatGPT to rewrite my content.
Let’s have a look at this output:
Although it’s not something I could grab and run with, this might give me some ideas on how to structure a paragraph.
Adding formatting
Blog content can be prone to being broken into sections and not using skimmable formatting.
This can reduce the engagement of your content and make it less attractive for search engines.
ChatGPT is a great tool for this:
This is the updated article’s body, which was previously a few walls of text.
Ideas for other topics to be covered
ChatGPT can provide insight into what your article might be lacking. ChatGPT is not an SEO tool so the ideas will not be driven by search recommendations. They may prove useful as long as they are relevant to your readers.
You can also search for topics and questions that are relevant to your audience.
Take a look at the difference in the outputs that I get when I ask questions about the airline industry.
And someone who travels a lot:
Add new subsections to this article
ChatGPT can be used to create small sections of content if you are able to read and edit the content.
Let’s suppose we wanted to add a section to our article about whether or not airline prices will fall since people are searching and asking for it.
ChatGPT is using old information so we wouldn’t want to abandon it. However, we could give it the answer and ask it for something.
Adding FAQs to the FAQ schema
You can add FAQs to your blog post if the author has not already created one.
ChatGPT can answer your questions as well (always fact-check).
Lastly, you can ask for the tool to generate your FAQ schema:
This will help you add search-friendly content and increase your SERP.
E-E-A – T – How to Make it More Effective
You can still use the training ChatGPT to learn more about the quality rater guidelines to make your article more credible.
These may not be the most original E-E-A–T ideas, but they can serve as reminders of other options. ChatGPT can edit my article to add E-E-A -T.
ChatGPT opted to ignore the first E in E–E-A–T, but then I shared all my travel industry experience.
Except that I never told ChatGPT that I worked in travel, and it wasn’t mentioned in the original article.
The remainder of the article is very similar to the original, so it doesn’t appear like ChatGPT has much of an E–E-A–T editor.
(Officially, the E-A–T to E-E–A-T update occurred after the training period of GPT-3. ChatGPT will not be aware of this other than the context I provided.
Update outdated information
ChatGPT’s training information dates back to 2021 so updating the outdated information will not be a good idea.
However, there are certain situations where the tool could be used for such purposes.
- Report summaries – Asking ChatGPT for a summary of a new study might allow you to infuse fresh data into an old article.
- A new version of an old document: In the same way, you can find the latest version of an older report and replace it with the page that refers to the older one.
- Annual reports – ChatGPT cannot always find new data or studies. However, you can ask the tool to surface reports produced each year. This will direct you to the report so that you can grab the most recent version.
Style rewriting
The right tone and sentiment can help content be shared more often, get better engagement metrics, convert better, or be shared more.
ChatGPT could make my content more sensational if I ask them to:
Or, more disturbingly, ChatGPT can point ChatGPT’s outrage at whomever it pleases:
To give visitors a different perspective, you could pivot the article.
Convert your post to HTML, and add internal links
Converting posts from a Google Doc, Word Doc or other format is often part and parcel of the editorial workflow. ChatGPT is able to accomplish this task quickly.
ChatGPT can help you with an additional common SEO task: adding internal links to your article.
This can be a great way to quickly create links if you have a long-form article and you know the URLs of the anchor text that you want.
This is not a substitute for knowing which pages you want links to from your article, or for identifying the best pages that link to your updated content.
Translations
Do you translate content from one language into another in order to get more traffic from search engines? ChatGPT is a great tool.
It’s a good idea, as always, to have someone who is familiar with the language you are publishing to your site QA it before you publish it live.
Bonus: Podcast transcriptions and video
ChatGPT cannot help with this, but Open AI announced recently that both Whisper and ChatGPT now have APIs.
Whisper, an automatic speech recognition system, can transcribe audio in multiple languages.
Whisper API allows you to add text to your audio content to create crawlable text.
ChatGPT: When should you use it for SEO editing tasks
ChatGPT may not be able to do all of these functions, but it might be the best choice for your specific task.
These factors will help you determine how qualified ChatGPT is for your job.
- It’s unlikely that a topic or task requires newness or updated information.
- ChatGPT will not accept a complex prompt that requires ChatGPT perform multiple tasks simultaneously or requires you to feed ChatGPT more than 3,000 characters per chat.
- You may need to have ideas, variations, or just some inspiration. ChatGPT is very helpful.
If the tool is useful in certain areas, but not in others, I encourage you to keep an “wishlist” of tasks that are close but not sufficient.
Open AI releases quickly new versions of its underlying GPT technology as well as various Open AI APIs. They also release rapid platform updates simultaneously.
The limitations of ChatGPT (e.g., the limit on the number and type of characters through the API or web interface as well as how much ChatGPT can retain in a conversation, data freshness and the number it can complete through complex prompts) will likely increase.
Keep an eye out for changes in future updates that could impact your not-quite there-yet task.
